Chill Wind

Secure in my shack, and sheltered from the cold
Reading from a wise book so very old
Deep in the woodlands, my true home
Keeping a narrow path, all alone
Watching as snow flies, blinding my eyes
It's a Chill Wind that blows... It's a Chill Wind that blows

I'm less confined than ever, yet I rarely go outside
I'm conscious of a vast space where I abide
Here I find you with me, we laugh and we rejoice
But to fill the other's cup, is the only choice
Besides braving the night air, and my friend you must beware
It's a Chill Wind that blows... It's a Chill Wind that blows

You can't expect a river to lie still between two shores
It's a downhill rush, it can not stay
And some inland folks will never miss the water
Till the gulf between us falls away

Now I go about my living, at least that's how it seems
Suffusing reality with my dreams
Maybe nothing will happen, though I must admit my doubt
There's something in the air, that I wonder about
Something I can't name, I sit with a candleflame and outside
A Chill Wind that blows... It's a Chill Wind that blows

On With The Show!

Maryellen worked in the factory, since she was a girl of nineteen
Thought her life was fine, sittin’ on that line
For twenty years – it’s all that she’d seen
Until one day – her foreman came down, said “go on home girl, they gave your jobs away
I’m sorry that it ended this way, but there’s not much more I can say”

Now some folks are just plain old stupid, some are lazy, they don’t give a damn
Other people, like Maryellen, feel the need - to take some kind of stand
Oh, but life - isn’t always fair, her friends said “Mary, stop wastin’ your time
Because even if you win this war, you’ll end up right back on that line
(She thought about that)

CHORUS:
The leaves keep on fallin’ down, while the winter comes back every year
The sun goes down with an orange glow
Life goes on, everybody keeps singin’ their own song
While we try to teach our children everything they know
it’s like goin’ to the circus really...
On with the show

Sometimes life hands you a cupcake, and sometimes it just bites you on the hand
You can lay down and give it up, or design – a new master plan
Maryellen bought a guitar, she wrote some music, joined a band
And she says that she’s happier now - than she has ever been

Chorus

The Rain

Feelin' wild tonight, I don't know what's right, what have we started?
Bringin' flowers to my door 'til I don't know me anymore, I just can't think
When the morning comes tomorrow will I open up my eyes and see you sleeping?
Your love flows through me like water so I open up my mind and take a drink

CHORUS
And the rain falls down like evening turns to sunset
As the oceans will always keep reaching for the shore
And we can't stop laughing & smiling at each other
'Til I can't tell me from you anymore

Now i know it's right & I wish I had you here tonight so you could hold me
When you read my mind I wonder if you know the girl I want to be
When I close my eyes I see an old man holding an old woman
That man has your eyes & the woman looks a little bit like me

I'll Make You Mine

I think about you all the time, I can't wait until you're mine
It's makin' me crazy
I'm not the girl I used to be, even my friends can see
My judgement’s gettin' hazy

Walk by
Just watchin' you makes me high
Don't try
to pretend you don't notice
It’s a matter of time

CHORUS:
I'm gonna win you over, you won't even know what hit ya
My love is singin' like a wind chime
Sending music to your heart, with a melody that will get you boy
When I make you mine

You might as well surrender, you know you want to
Let your love light shine
And I think it's time, for a little 'Happy Ever After' boy
When, I make you mine

Walk by
Just watchin' you makes me high
Don't try
to pretend you don't notice
It’s a matter of time

CHORUS

I'll make you mine

Fast Car

Gonna buy me a fast car, fastest one that I can find
Gonna hit that highway, gonna leave it all behind
Gonna buy me a fast car, there won't be no catchin' me this time

Gonna buy me a shot gun, gonna point it up at the sky
Cause I'm lookin for answers and no one can tell me why
So I bought me a fast car, there won't be no catchin me this time

But I'm not gonna worry

Gonna make me a new start, you're gonna find me in a new place
Gonna live like an island, just me & the road & amazing grace
And my fast car, there won't be no catchin me this time

I'm goin' down-down-down-down-down---down (x2)
But I'm not gonna worry (x3)

Gonna buy me a fast car, fastest one that I can find
Gonna hit that highway, gonna leave it all behind
Gonna buy me a fast car, there won't be no catchin' me this time

Stop looking for answers, cause you're never gonna understand
It's all smoke & mirrors, but I got ten dollars and a master plan
In my Fast Car, won't be no catchin me this time

I'm goin' down-down-down-down-down----down (x3)

Here In Indiana

December mist driftin’ through the trees
Sends a cold chill to my soul
I could use some warm sunshine
Sometimes I miss you so
The rooms gettin’ dark, so I light a few candles
Slip into my mandolin
Jamaica kicks in, imagination my best friend
and we walk beside the ocean again

CHORUS:
But here in Indiana
There’s a bright new sprinkling of snow
Looks like God spray-painted diamonds
Over everything, now, that’s a show
I remember you on a moonlight beach
Watchin’ stars fall while we got high
And here in Indiana
I’m thinkin’ about you tonight

I hear that you’re doing fine
And I guess I’m okay too
Still, every now and then
I’d like to touch your skin
Oh I want to sing to you
But for now it’s just me and your memory
Sharing a bottle of wine
On this cold silver night, a song’s takin’ flight
As I think about you one more time

CHORUS

Here in Indiana
I’m thinkin’ about you tonight

Low Down

Put the key in the ignition and I threw that pickup truck in drive
Never would have thought that this could happen to you & me
I didn't hit the county line before I realized
I could walk away from you but I can't outrun your memory

Chorus:
And I've been low-low-low-low-low-low down
But it don't feel like this, it don't feel like this

You took me by surprise when you told me you found somebody new
I gave you my heart, but you were always wanting more
And I can't stop thinking about a time when we were happier
Back before love turned into a tug of war

Chorus

Bridge:
I wake up at night screaming out your name
I gave you my life, I wasn't playing games
And I'd come back know if you'd show me the way
But you don't want me and I can't stop cryin'!

Ira Pember

My granny on my daddy's side, had another husband who ran to hide
In the tall and uncut woods way up in Michigan
A strange and lazy man they say, who couldn't wait to get away
And spend 40 years up north and never shave his chin

Ira, Ira Pember was his name
Built a 2-story cabin and milked his goats and drank his mountain dew
Ira, Ira Pember was his name
Do you hear me Ira, playin' this one for you?

He painted and made flourishings, and framed them with old ship's mahogany
I saw his fancy pen & inks and pretty birds
Loggers say on snowy nights, away off yonder you'd see his lights
And Tchaikovski was the music that they heard

Ira, Ira Hangin' out so hard
Walkin' around the canvases, and a-ramblin' through the yard
Ira, with your whiskers hangin' low
Left a wife and child for solitude and snow

When the old man died they laid him clean, in flannel shirt and old blue jeans
The man, he did the job and did it right
All of Ira's days his beard, looked grayish-brown and kinda weird
But in his box it laid toad-belly white

Ira, Ira Pember was his name
I hear the stories that they tell, they say you were insane
Ira, Ira, playin' in the woods
Old Ira, you played it mighty good....

Shattered Heart

Well I was a woman with childish ways
with my head in the clouds, I wasted my days
I was looking for something to take me away
and always beside me, my lover would lay

I never noticed how quiet he'd grown
My minds was wandering, but I should have known
I never realized that he felt so alone,
til he left me a letter & didn't come home

Chorus:
now I could have everything, my dreams could come true
but that don't me nothin' if I don't have you
and no desparation, or prayer on the the wind
Could put my shattered heart back together again

I never meant to treat you so unkind
it's you that I need, and it's you I can't find
and if I had the power, I'd turn back time
I would do better, and you'd still be mine

Chorus to end

The Old Cat Song

One of his ears was ragged
And the other one just about gone
At the end of the day, getting’ close to dark
You could hear his Old Cat Song
He fought opossums, dogs, and occasional brooms
Somehow he made it through the winter
But it’s getting’ hard out in the yard
And these days he’s not much of a sprinter

When he was young
He ruled the woods around here
Birds and squirrels and pretty kitten girls
Stood alert when he came near
He had big yellow eyes
And his hair was dreadlocked and gray
Standing low to the ground he’d rather stare ya down
Than turn and run away

Bein’ young on a summer night
Knowin’ there’s no one can be your match
Turnin’ heads because you look so good
Sometimes he misses that

His children have all scattered
Though he sees ‘em every now and then
Their mama is just a memory
Still, he wonders if she misses him
Stretched out in the mornin’ sun
Before pouncin’ on another day
and the way he came along
the old cat went away

Bein’ young on a summer night
Knowing there’s no one can be your match
Turnin’ heads because you look so good
Sometimes he misses that
Stretched out in the mornin’ sun
Before pouncin’ on another day
And the way he came along
The old cat went a way

Little Cowgirl's Lullaby

Good night, baby
Little cowgirl close your eyes
Sleep tight and maybe
You’ll dream of rodeos tonight

CHORUS:
Riding on a wild cloud
High above the moon
Lasso a star just for fun
Out on the prairie
On a warm summer night
Come home to mommy when you’re done

Sleep tight, and maybe
You’ll dream of rodeos tonight
Little cowgirl goodnight

CHORUS

A Matter of Time

WIFE:
Do you think you're the first girl to fall in love this way
You won't be the last one, and that's why i've come to say
There was a time when I believed in him too
There was a time, girl, I was just like you

GIRLFRIEND:
He said you pushed him away
He said you didn't understand
When we're together, he says he feels alive again.
But something inside me knows I'm walkin' a thin line
I've known all along, it was a matter of time

BRIDGE:
Love don't come easy
We want it so badly that we'll break all the rules
Just to wake up one morning
And find out that we've all been fooled.

WIFE:
It's been over for a long time, I won't stand in your way

GIRLFRIEND:
I need him beside me at the end of the day
There's no way of knowin' the true cost of love's crimes
But we'll pay sooner or later, it's just a matter of time

We'll pay sooner or later. It's just a matter of time
